»Hemophilia« (x-linked recessive)

Basic Information/ Interesting Facts:
external image hemophilia.jpgHemophilia is an x-linked recessive disease, which effects the chromsome 18. Males are more commonly seen to have this disorder, but in some rare circumstances females have been seen to have it too. Few inherit this disease, but the few that inherit it are not so lucky. They are born with little to no protein and it becomes a clotting factor. Without these clotting factors, the site of the injury cannot stop bleeding. There are two types of hemophilia. There is hemophilia A (little to no clotting factor VIII), which 9 out of 10 people with hemophilia have this type. Another type of hemophilia is, hemophilia B (low levels or missing clotting factor IX).
Seven out of ten people have the severe version of hemophilia! You also can acquire hemophilia later in life, you don't have to inherit it when you're born right away. Almost 18,000 people in the US have hemophilia today, and 400 babies are born every year with it. You're lucky to not be born with this disease, be grateful for it, some are not so lucky!
