dwarfISM

General info:

  • Dwarfism is a a genetic disorder that leaves the person with a short stature.
  • A Dwarf is a person with an adult height of less than 4 feet and 10 inches.
  • There are around 200 medical conditions that cause dwarfism, and most of them interfer with normal growth.

Types of Dwarfism:

  • There are two main branches of dwarfism:
    • Pituitary Dwarfism- this is caused by a lack of growth hormones. These people are often reffered to as midgets.
    • Achondroplasia- these people have short stature, abnormal bone growth, and very short arms and legs. This is caused by a mutation of the FGFR3 gene. The FGFR3 gene is located on the short arm of chromosome 4 at position 16.3. It is an autosomal dominant allele and it usually results from a new gene mutation from parent to child.

About Dwarfism:

  • Dwarfism is a ressive trait which means if a person get a dominant trait from either their mother or father they will be normal, both parents can be normal and produce a dwarf child, if they have heterozygous alleles, which means they are carrying the trait for dwarfism but it doesnt show up. A punnet square can describe this very well.

Treatment:

    • Operations throughout life to prevent paralysis, correct spinal poture, open airways, and reduce pressure on their brain.
    • These operations consist of breaking bones and then resetting them further apart with metal braces attached. This allows the bones to "glue" together. This is very painful for the person, and it can

      have dramatically harmful side effects.

Locus:

  • The gene for achondroplasia is on the short (p) arm of chromosome 4 in chromosome band 4p16.3.

Effects and symptoms:

  • Dawrfism occurs 1 in every 14,000 births. These are just a few of the many symptoms of dwarfism:
    • Dramatically short arms and legs.
    • Large head
    • Prominents forehead
    • Pertruding jaw
    • Crowded and misaligned teeth
    • Broad feet and bowed legs.

Other info:

  • Some famous midgets include Wee man and Mini-Me. Both of these actors have taken advantage of their genetic disorder and have made millions of dollars in the comedy business. Wee man is the star of the HIT series Jackass and Mini-Me stars in movies such as the Austin Powers series.
