Crohn's Disease

Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease which causes inflammation or swelling of the digestive tract, the small and large intestines. This is also known as the gastrointestinal tract. This disease can effect any part of the gastrointestinal tract.

The locus for Crohn's disease is found on chromosome 16. Some other variations of the ATG16LI, IRGM, and NOD2 genes increase the risk and the IL23R gene is also common with Crohn's Disease. external image Image1.gif

This disease has equal evidence in both males and females. We see that in Crohn's disease, 20% of the cases appear to run in families. Research has shown evidence of a genetic indication to a chronic inflammatory bowel disease occurs in all races and ethnic groups, especially most common among Jewish of Eastern European descent and Caucasians.

Crohn's Disease is named after an American gastroenterologist, Burrill Crohn, who was the first to discover the disease in 1932. Usually found in teens and with people in their twenties, yet also can come around later in life.

Crohn's Disease can cause minimal symptoms; even without medical treatment. Some cases vary from mild to severe, which vary from person to person. Symptoms include persistent diarrhea, abdominal cramps and pains, bleeding, fever, weight loss, fatigue and loss of appetite. It also may effect liver, skin, eyes, and joints.

In the mild forms of Crohn's the intestine lining is full of craters and ulcers. In severe cases, larger ulcers form causing the obstruction and narrowing of the bowel, which may lead to holes in the lining of the bowel wall. If this occurs it may lead to adjacent organs and/or infection in the abdominal cavity. Diagnosis is made by x-ray or colonoscopy. Some treatments are surgery, anti-inflammatories, immune suppressors or antibiotics.

Crohn's Disease has affected 500,000 people in the United States.

Types of Crohn's Disease

1.Crohn's colitis is inflammation in the colon. Common symptoms are bloody diarrhea and servere abdominal pain.

2.Crohn's enteritis is an inflammation in the small intestine, obstruction of small intestine may occur. Abdominal pain and diarrhea are the common symptoms.

3.Crohn's terminal ileitis is an inflammation that only affects the end of the small intestine, which is closest to the colon. Common symptoms are abdominal pain and diarrhea. This may cause obstruction of the small intestines.
